Before Baskin Robbins (and waaaaay before Cold Stone/Marble Slab, etc), Kay’s Ice Cream (on Chapman Highway) was the place to go for ice cream (at least in S. Knoxville). And for as long as I can remember this has been their advertising sign. The white you see in the background is the top portion of a building.
I’ve never noticed any other ginormous ice cream displays like this one but when I went online to find any information about the age of the Kay’s cone (thought to be early 1960s), I found an entire page of them, with pictures of the giant ice cream signs from all over the country. Who knew.
The other thing I discovered by reading different posts is that at one time the ladder along the right hand side of the cone hosted a fiberglass boy with a long tongue. I wonder what happened to him?
If there is a giant ice cream in your area, would you please send me photographs?
